Remotly can reach a remote computer in three ways. You do not have to choose one manually: the app tries a direct link first and falls back to a relay when the network does not allow it. Organizations can additionally replace the public relay network with their own server.
Direct P2P
A direct link between the client and the host whenever the network allows it. This is the fastest path and the one recommended for gaming and other latency‑sensitive work.
- Unlimited transfer
- Bitrate up to 100 Mbps
- Automatic UPnP port mapping or a manually forwarded port
Connect Anywhere cloud
Relayed connections through Remotly's cloud when a direct link is not possible — for example behind a corporate firewall, double NAT or mobile networks. The app picks the fastest server by ping and geolocation. See Connect Anywhere for plan limits.
- Works behind firewalls and NAT
- File transfer up to 10 MB/s
- Fastest server picked by ping and geolocation
Private relay server
Your own relay, installed on‑premises or in a private cloud you designate. Traffic between your users never leaves infrastructure you control, which makes it the right choice for GDPR‑sensitive data. Setup guides: Windows and Linux.
- Full control over where data is processed
- Wake‑on‑LAN from external networks
- GDPR‑ready data sovereignty
Whichever path is used, every session is encrypted end‑to‑end with RSA-4096 key exchange and AES-256 data streams — a relay only forwards encrypted packets and cannot read them.
